Rasmussen Poll Shows Alabama Governor's Race Tightening

The Alabama governor's race is beginning to tighten up with less than two months to go before the primary election June 6, according to the latest Rasmussen Reports election survey.

Republican Governor Bob Riley is still leading Democrat Lt. Governor Lucy Baxley, but only by seven percentage points, 47 percent to 40 percent. Riley leads former Gov. Don Siegelman by 17 percent.

Only a month ago, the incument governor held slightly larger lead against both Democrats.

"Siegelman is struggling in both fundraising and (in) the polls," Rasmussen reports. "He is under indictment on federal racketeering charges with a trial scheduled for May 1."

The Democrat Primary is just over a month later on June 6.

The survey shows that "'Baxley's Campaign of Hope' is gaining momentum and resonating with Alabama voters," says Jimmy DeButts, Baxley's communications director. "In just over a month, Baxley has narrowed Gov. Bob Riley's lead from 16 points to seven points. The poll also confirms that Baxley is the Democrat with the best chance of beating Riley."

Ms. Baxley says that during her recent travels across the state, "I have heard the concerns hard-working Alabamians have about affordable health care, restoring trust in state government and improving our public school system. Our campaign is gaining momentum."

If former Alabama Supreme Court Chief Justice Roy Moore, who is running against the incument governor as a Republican, pulls off an upset in the GOP Primary, "the race becomes much more competitive," according to Rasmussen.

Moore leads Siegelman by only four points and trails Baxley by three.

"Moore was booted from his judicial office for insisting on a display of the Ten Commandments," Rasmussen says, and polls show that 76 percent of Alabama's registered voters support such a display. Despite that, Moore is considered a long-shot in the primary. Riley has reportedly raised 12 times as much money as Moore in the most recent campaign report.

About the polls for gov., 47% Riley to 40% Baxley, right now makes me think we CAN have a woman democrat in the gov's mansion this time...that's great that she is doing so well...

It looks like the writing is on the wall for Siegelman - he couldn't even beat Roy Moore...

I'd say we know who we need to be supporting...

Sorry, I know that maybe all of his problems may not be of his own making, and I'm sure he's a good guy and all, but we've got to look out for the lot of us blue dots...

I hope that Siegelman can eventually rise above the associations with the likes of Richard Scrushy and maybe he will be
a better statesman when he is older...

It sounds like Lucy's poll to me.
